The Canada Revenue Agency's (CRA) Express NOA service, available with EFILE certified software products, allows authorized representatives to receive the notice of assessment in the software immediately after filing a return.

The notice of assessment provides an account summary with the result of the assessed return showing a refund, a zero balance, or a balance owing, tax assessment summary, explanation of changes and other information, as well as the RRSP/PRPP deduction limit statement. It may also contain the Home Buyers' Plan statement and Lifelong Learning Plan statement.

The Express NOA service is available year-round.

What you will need to use this service

Please ensure that the following conditions are met prior to using this service:

  • You must have a CRA or Sign-In partner credential and online access for your client. To obtain online access for your client, complete an E-authorization web submission for Authorization or Cancelling a Representative via the Represent a Client portal or through DT Max. For more information, see the CRA's About Represent a Client web page.

  • You must have a valid T183 with Part E for Express NOA completed (see below for instructions on how to do this) and/or your client has registered for Email notifications.

  • The time must be set correctly on your computer. The CRA has a time limit for completing the transaction. A discrepancy of more than five minutes between the time on your computer and the correct time is enough for the CRA to invalidate the transaction.

  • The time zone must be set correctly on your computer. This is because UTC time is used for the transaction.

How to request the Express NOA in Part E of Form T183

  1. Select EFILE Setup from the Efile menu on the toolbar.

  2. Select the EFILE defaults tab.

  3. In the "Instant CRA notice of assessment (Express NOA) – T183 Part E" section, select "I want instant CRA notice of assessment".

  4. If you wish to override your default setting for any client, you can use the keyword Fed-NOA-Express for that particular client.

Important notice

When your client completes Part E of Form T183 to have his notice of assessment or reassessment made available electronically to you, the CRA will not send you or your client a paper copy of the notice of assessment or reassessment.

If your client is registered to receive email notifications from the CRA, your client will receive an email notification to inform him that there is online mail available to view in CRA's My Account.

After you download the Express Notice of Assessment, you will always have access to it in the Data Entry screen, so you can share it with your client. DT Max stores the path of the archived file in the keyword NOA-File-Name (in the keyword group Progress "Assessment notice received – federal"). Users of DT Client Portal or Onvio can securely send the notice of assessment to their clients using either of these cloud-based products.

The Express Notice of Assessment is also delivered in the Tax return section of DT Max. You can save or email the Notice of Assessment as a PDF file. You can also print Notices of Assessment in batches by using a customized destination found in Printing options.
